Self-Care & Thankfulness: A November Reminder for Teachers

November can be a whirlwind in the classroom. Halloween parties are over and everyone is full of candy. The excitement of fall activities blends with the push toward the end of the semester, report cards, and parent conferences. Plus, you’re trying to finish lessons before Thanksgiving and Winter break. In the middle of it all, it’s easy to keep pouring energy into students, lessons, and school events without pausing to refill your own (coffee, tea, or water) cup.

This month, let’s take a moment to slow down and practice some much needed self care.

Start with Gratitude

Gratitude isn’t just a feel-good phrase—it’s a proven way to reduce stress, boost happiness, and build resilience. Try keeping a small “thankful list” on your desk or in your planner. Each day, jot down one thing that made you smile: a student’s “aha!” moment, a colleague’s kindness, a quiet five minutes before class starts, or a great interaction with a parent/caregiver. Small moments of gratitude add up and remind us of the joy in our work. They can also serve as a reminder of how far you’ve come since your first day, or your first year, in the classroom. You can also share your gratitude — be sure to tell another teacher you see who is doing a great job that you see all the hard work they are doing.

Reclaim a Moment for Yourself

Self-care doesn’t have to mean spa days or long vacations (though those are nice too!). It can be as simple as:

  • Taking a mindful walk during lunch.
  • Leaving school on time once a week.
  • Saying “no” to one extra task.
  • Bringing your favorite tea or playlist to your classroom.
  • Practice mindfulness — this blog post talks about some ways that you can take care of yourself.

Celebrate the Good Work You’re Doing

So take a deep breath. Savor a moment of quiet before fifth period. Reflect on what you’re thankful for, and remember that we at Edvotek are thankful for you! Teachers give so much of themselves, often without realizing how deeply you are making a difference. This November, give yourself credit for the effort, creativity, and compassion you bring to your classroom every day. You are shaping lives, inspiring curiosity, and creating a safe place for students to learn and grow.
